Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
From the volcanoes of the Auvergne in the west to the chic ski resorts of the Rhone-Alpes, you could not imagine a more dramatic landscape than this region. Paragliders descend on the Auvergne in summer to launch themselves off the high volcanic peaks where they drift in colourful clouds over alpine meadows filled with the local Salers cattle. Skiing is available here in winter but the east is much better known for its world class winter sports resorts.
