From wide open agricultural areas to the hills and peaks of the Niévre and south to broad flat plains, this is a deeply rural region. Towns tend to be small but there is plenty of cultural interest to discover such as fortified medieval salt stores, strong houses to protect the borders with the rest of Europe, churches and convents with amazing colourful roofs. Not yet tempted? How about the huge range of local cheeses (thanks to the best mountain milk in france), mustards, Bresse chicken, snails and Burgundy wine.
