Summer might be the obvious season to enjoy your French garden, but winter has its own charm too: crisp blue skies, cool refreshing air, and, if you choose the right plants, wonderful colour and fragrance. With a warm hat, a pair of gardening gloves, and trusty wellies, you can get outside and transform your outdoor space into a vibrant winter haven.
As spring approaches, the days get longer and the opportunities to sit outside multiply. Imagine sipping a warm cup of tea while breathing in the sweet scent of Daphne, a stunning shrub with pink-purple blooms that flower from February to March. Or bring a touch of early summer to your winter garden with Mahonias, whose bold yellow flowers brighten even the coldest months.
Of course, no conversation about winter flowers is complete without two seasonal classics: Hellebores, elegant yet remarkably hardy, and the timeless snowdrops, whose pure white blooms never fail to charm.
Our favourite flowers for winter colour
Winter Jasmine
Perfect as a climber or trailing delicately from a pot. It can easily be moved once its flowering period ends, ideal for flexible displays.
Winter Honeysuckle
A wonderful way to attract winter-active bumblebees. Its fragrance alone makes it worth planting.
Pansies
A must-have for winter flowerbeds. Though common, their large, cheerful blooms deliver a much-needed burst of colour in the colder months.
Cyclamen Coum
Dainty yet robust, these look enchanting planted beneath trees or shrubs, perfect for creating a woodland-style corner.
Winter Aconites
If you love buttercups, these bright yellow flowers will be a joyful addition to your winter garden.
Flowering Heathers
A personal favourite and ideal for pots, terraces, or balconies. They provide long-lasting colour and texture.
English Primroses
Traditional, charming, and wonderfully reliable, an easy choice for any winter garden.
Witch Hazel
A more unusual option. Most varieties flower in winter, producing striking, spidery blooms. Be sure to allow plenty of space; some mature trees can reach up to 20 feet.
Sarcococca Confusa (Sweet Box)
A fantastic all-rounder offering glossy foliage, delicate ivory flowers, and a beautiful vanilla scent.
Winter-Flowering Honeysuckle Varieties
Small but fragrant flowers appear from late January. Ideal for adding pockets of scent around the garden!
Top tip
Plant your Daphne and Mahonia shrubs in pots so you can move them once they finish flowering. Not every plant lends itself to pot rotation; climbers, for example, are better left in place, so consider choosing varieties that provide interest across multiple seasons. A great option is the winter-flowering clematis. The ‘Jingle Bells’ variety, with its citrus fragrance, flowers in winter and offers lush foliage through summer—perfect for those first sunny apéritifs of the year.
