The department of Aude, in Languedoc-Roussillon, offers a magical and varied landscape. This is Cathar country, with the magnificent fortified city of Carcassonne at its heart — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and well worth a visit. The hot, dry summers favour vines and olive trees, particularly in the renowned Minervois and Corbières regions.
To the north lie the Black Mountains, to the west: Montreal, Bram, and Castelnaudary (famed for its Cassoulet). To the east, the Mediterranean coast, near Narbonne, where coastal lakes are home to exotic birdlife, including white stilts and pink flamingos. Further inland, towards Lézignan Corbières are a plethora of villages, as well as the famous Canal du Midi.
South of Carcassonne you will find some wonderful towns: Limoux, Alet les Bains, Axat, and Quillan are perfect for those seeking rural charm and space.
