Spring Flower Markets Not to Miss in Southwest France – Part One

Spring Flower Markets Not to Miss in Southwest France – Part One

There’s a particular kind of magic about spring in southwest France. The wisteria is out, the countryside is an improbable shade of green, and suddenly every medieval village square has transformed itself into a riot of colour and scent. It’s flower market season – and around here, that’s taken seriously.

Whether you’re a committed gardener, a casual browser, or simply someone who can’t resist a sunny morning wandering between stalls piled high with roses and rosemary, there’s a marché aux fleurs with your name on it. Here’s our pick of the best happening across the region in late April and early May.

Fourcès, Gers – one not to miss next year

If you missed it this weekend, put it straight in the diary for 2027. The Fourcès flower market takes place in a circular medieval village classified among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France,” running across the last weekend of April, 8:30am to 6pm.

This year’s theme was peace, with 87 exhibitors filling the village, plus an oyster bar on the Place des Cornières and a banda playing on Sunday afternoon.  Nursery owners, florists, creative artisans and landscape designers all take part, with demonstrations including vine grafting, pottery, and woodturning.  There’s a jury prize for the best-decorated stand and, delightfully, local youngsters ferry your purchases around the village with their wheelbarrows.  It regularly draws thousands of visitors and is widely regarded as one of the finest flower markets in the whole of the southwest. Entry is just €1.

Marché aux Plantes, La Rochebeaucourt-et-Argentine, Charente – 26 April 2026

The village of La Rochebeaucourt-et-Argentine in the Charente hosts its spring plant market on Sunday 26 April, running from 9am to 6pm.  A good-sized local event with a relaxed atmosphere, it’s a fine excuse to explore this particularly lovely corner of the Charente countryside, which is at its very best right now.

Foire aux Fleurs, Tournon d’Agenais, Lot-et-Garonne – 1 May 2026

Perched high on its hilltop above the Boudouyssou valley, Tournon d’Agenais is one of those Plus Beaux Villages de France that genuinely earns the title – and on the 1st of May it pulls out all the stops for its annual flower fair.

Organised by the association Les Amis de la Bastide, the Foire aux Fleurs is a well-established tradition, drawing between 4,000 and 5,000 visitors and nearly 80 exhibitors from across Lot-et-Garonne and the neighbouring departments of the Lot and Tarn-et-Garonne.  Flowers, plants and regional products fill the square all day, with musical entertainment throughout, and shuttles and a little train running from the car parks up to the village.  This year marks the 30th edition – reason enough to make the trip.

Les Fleurs de Mai, Saint-Benoît, Vienne – 2 & 3 May 2026

If you want sheer scale, this is your market. Now in its 23rd edition, Les Fleurs de Mai transforms the pedestrianised town centre of Saint-Benoît – on the doorstep of Poitiers – into an open-air plant fair covering more than 30,000 square metres, with over 60 specialist producers and nurseries presenting around 150,000 plants and flowers over two days.

Vivaces, aromatics, roses, climbers, shrubs, vegetable plants, orchids, cacti and medicinal plants are all on offer, including rare varieties, with expert advice freely available throughout.  Entry is free, the whole centre is pedestrianised for the weekend, and free shuttle buses run every 20 minutes.  It draws tens of thousands of visitors from across Nouvelle-Aquitaine and is genuinely one of the great plant events of the whole region.

Les Printanières, Bergerac, Dordogne – early May 2026

A beloved regional plant festival is back, this time based at the Atelier du Végétal nursery in Bergerac, with around twenty exhibitors – mainly specialist collector nurseries – gathering to present original and lesser-known plants from the wider Grand Sud-Ouest.  It’s a more specialist affair than the village fêtes – this is the one for serious plant hunters looking for something a little out of the ordinary. Food and drinks are available on site.

Fête des Plantes, Château des Ducs de Mortemart, Haute-Vienne – 2 & 3 May 2026

For something altogether more intimate and rather magical, the Château des Ducs de Mortemart – itself one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France – opens its doors for its annual plant fair. A carefully curated selection of specialist horticulturists and nurseries set up within the grounds of this historic monument, offering rare plants, heritage varieties and species well suited to the region’s gardens, alongside artisan garden crafts and local produce.

Many of the exhibitors have been recognised at national level at renowned events such as Saint-Jean de Beauregard and Chantilly  – so this is a serious affair, beautifully set. The fair runs 10am to 6pm both days; entry is €5 for adults, free for under-18s, and the château is about 30 minutes from Limoges.

Fête des Fleurs, Vitrac-Saint-Vincent, Charente – 3 May 2026

The village of Vitrac-Saint-Vincent rounds off the early May calendar with its annual flower festival on Sunday 3 May  – a smaller, community-led event with a genuinely warm village feel. Worth combining with a drive through the Charente, which is looking spectacular at this time of year.

Plenty more to come across the region later in May – look out for Part Two of our spring flower market round-up, covering the best of mid-to-late May.
