What is there to see and do in Charroux?

Charroux is a Petite Cité de Caractère, a label awarded to certain villages and which aims at preserving remarkable heritage. Located in the heart of the village, you can visit for free the remains of the abbey and its tower. Founded in 789, the abbey Saint-Sauveur has been through many transformations over the centuries, having been destroyed and rebuilt. 

Guided tours of the historic part of Charroux are also available.

What events take place in Charroux?

A weekly market is held each Thursday morning in Charroux and sells local and fresh produce. 

A flower market is held every year on Ascension Day which is in May. The date will change but Ascension Day is always a Thursday. 

Charroux also hosts a Christmas market every December and it is a great opportunity to get into the festive spirit!

What is there to see and do in Vienne?

One of the twelve departments that make up the Nouvelle Aquitaine region of France, the Vienne was once home to Eleanor of Aquitaine (wife of Henry II) and was a key site during the 100 Years War.

This pretty farming area offers a leisurely and peaceful way of life amidst fields of corn and sunflowers. The Vienne river meanders through and there are many attractions that make this a great area.

The Vallée des Singes (a monkey park) (17 km), the science theme park, Futuroscope, (70 km), golf courses, boating, fishing and numerous pretty towns and villages to visit will guarantee something for everyone and every interest. The Abbey of Saint-Savin (64 km) is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and well worth a visit, as is the very pretty village of Angles-sur-l’Anglin (82 km). Another village that should be on your list of places to visit is Verteuil-sur-Charente (28 km), which is also a Petite Cité de Caractère
