Bordeaux has been named joint winner of the EU’s 2022 European Capital of Smart Tourism competition, along with Valencia in Spain.

The competition was set up to recognise tourist cities for their sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation, as well as cultural heritage and creativity. 30 cities from across 16 countries competed.

Bordeaux’s initiatives that were highlighted included the cutting edge Cité du Vin museum, the bi-annual Wine Festival, the region’s environmental efforts to reduce pesticides in the wine industry, the iconic tram and river shuttles, and a special guide created by the Bordeaux Tourism Office for those with disabilities.

Bordeaux was also praised for making the most of and repurposing its existing resources and heritage, such as The Darwin Ecosystem, a repurposed military barracks that now houses an urban farm and France’s largest organic restaurant.

Whether for a day trip or a weekend, Bordeaux is a fabulous place to visit and one of our favourite cities. More information about the competition can be found here from the European Commision
