You may be surprised to learn that there are over 40 rock formations and craters on Mars that have been named after towns and villages in the Dordogne. Towns including Brantome, Sorges, Limeyrat, Coutures, Siorac de Ribérac, Tourtoirac and Daglan all now have a twin on the red planet. Fascinatingly, the reason is the similar mineral compositions between parts of Mars and the mineral rich Dordogne. In particular they share a mineral called Nontronite which was discovered near Nontron in 1822. As Mars is explored further, areas are named after the place where the mineral composition was first discovered on earth, so there are also parts of the red planet named after Australian, American and German towns. It appears that there are similarities between the way rocks were formed on Mars and Earth. We don’t have any properties for sale on Mars just yet, but we do have some beautiful Dordogne properties for sale a bit closer to home.
