Having been established as an award-winning international estate agency in the south west of France since 2008, our team has expanded to cover much of the Occitanie region. Now we are delighted to be able to fully assist property buyers and vendors in the wonderful Gard department.
For some time we have already been serving neighbouring Provence and the Languedoc, and as an international associate of Savills, we work closely with their French Riviera team. Many of our buyers from these areas are interested in expanding their search into the magnificent Gard. Our team in the region has also recently been joined by Barbara Heslop. Barbara moved to the Gard with her partner (a winemaker) after a long career in the UK as a property lawyer. She has many years of experience helping international property buyers and expats in France. Below she shares some of the places that should be on the itinerary of everyone who visits the Gard.
Unmissable places to visit in the Gard
I first visited the Gard over 40 years ago and am now happily settled in Laudun - a delightful village surrounded by vineyards and pine forests. Walking and cycling with gorgeous blue skies above have become a favourite pastime. Harvesting our own olives to produce fabulous oil for our salads is another highlight! The Gard really is a magical place to visit and live. Here are just some of my favourite treasures that I recommend you visit:
The Pont du Gard - An Iconic Heritage Site:
Known for its rich culture and historical heritage, the Gard has many notable landmarks. The most well known of which is surely the iconic Pont du Gard. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Pont du Gard is one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts in the world. It was built in the 1 st century AD to carry water from Uzès to what is now the city of Nimes. The aqueduct spans the Gardon River and has three tiers of arches. However, there is so much more than just the bridge to explore. Delightful walks and cycle routes can be found within the site and families flock to the river bank in the summer months to cool off in the crystal-clear water. You can also rent a kayak for the day at nearby Collias and kayak down the river and underneath the famous arches.
Nimes – A Roman Jewel:
Next stop when in the Gard is the Roman city of Nimes with its well-preserved monuments such as the Arena (les Arenes) - a Roman amphitheatre. The Roman temple la Maison Carree is another of Nimes treasures. The boulevards of the city provide a glorious adventure for those who simply love to meander, not forgetting of course the many kerbside bars and restaurants at which to relax and people watch!
Uzès – Medieval Magic:
North of Nimes we have the mediaeval town of Uzès known for its charming cobbled streets and squares, mediaeval architecture, and impressive Cathedral. Tourists and locals alike flock to the twice weekly markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. With a host of bars and restaurants to choose from and boutique shopping, Uzès is most definitely worth a visit.
The Camargue – Nature’s Paradise:
Moving south is the Camargue where the Rhône River meets the Mediterranean. A paradise for nature lovers with its wetlands, salt marshes and lagoons. Here you will also see wild horses and flamingos. The Camargue is also popular with cyclists with several designated cycle routes (voies vertes). Spend a day cycling between Aigues-Mortes, Grau du Roi and Port Camargue and be sure to make it out to the magnificent long sandy beach - Plage de l’Espiguette!
All in all, the Gard is a hugely diverse and fascinating destination. With history, nature, charming towns, beautiful beaches, fabulous wine and local produce, it offers something for everyone. It is a wonderful place to live or for a French holiday home.
