Table d’hotes - typically French, atypical experiences
One of the most delightful ways to spend quality time breaking bread in France is that of the table d’hotes.
It is especially good if you have a member of your party who spends half an hour changing their mind - after all, in the SW of France it can be hard to choose between the magret or entrecôte.
Table d’hotes literally means ‘table of the host’, but might be better understood as a ‘set menu’ - you literally get what you are given!
You are treated to multiple courses often with accompanying wine to taste and the best part is, as a foreigner, you ending up eating things you never would have chosen which makes for a wonderful culinary surprise. All at a fixed, often very reasonable price.
