So French! A dessert-lover’s dream
Why have one dessert when you can have 4 and not have people throwing up their hands and calling you a cochon? Well, they might think you’re a bit of a cochon because the option we’re talking about here is a Café Gourmand and, if you get a good one it’s a darn sight better than a standard dessert.
A shot of strong espresso accompanied by three, four or even five mini puds is the order of the day. We dare anyone with a sweet tooth or an eye for afters to resist as you see them being carried with reverence towards an adjoining table.
My last café gourmand included a rich and creamy chocolate mousse, a not-so-tiny tiramisu, a strawberry wearing a white chocolate hat and a dainty crème brulée. Bliss.
A foodie friend once scoffed when I said that this was my favourite kind of pudding. ‘That’s not pudding. You need a slab of chocolate cake or a big bit of crumble before you can call it pudding.’ 15 years in France and I still beg to differ and I’ll carry on taking my chances with the lucky dip of café gourmand.
