Penne d’Agenais has been named one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”
Penne d’Agenais has recently gained the award for one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France,” as reported in Ladepeche.fr. Located in the Lot-et-Garonne, this is the fifth town in the region to be awarded this title, after Tournon d’Agenais gained the label in 2020. All five towns are situated close to the Lot Valley, including Monflanquin, Pujols and Villeréal who also already have this label.
Penne d’Agenais is a charming mediaeval town with cobbled streets and gorgeous architecture. Situated on a cliff, there are gorgeous panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, where you can see 60km in all directions - rivers, rolling hills and beautiful vineyards. One of the key attractions in the town is the Romanesque-Byzantine cathedral Notre-Dame-de-Peyragude, with its beautiful gleaming silver domes which can be seen from miles around.
The town is also full of arts and crafts shops, as well as local markets, cafés and restaurants where you can sample the local specialities of duck confit or the Agen prunes. There’s certainly a lot to explore and a lot of reasons why it has been awarded this coveted title!
