It’s back to school in France this week, where many students have had over 8 weeks holiday. We talk to some parents and students about what they like about the school system in France, and about why they’re happy to be starting another year.

Nicola and Elliot bought a property with James in the Ruffec office over six years ago, and have worked as teachers in Bordeaux for many years. They say that the “wrap around care” for children is excellent in France and very much in the “family’s favour,” so that parents can work. After-school care is generally available until 6.30pm with low costs, which are normally highly subsidised.

Food is another love for this family, where children are given “excellent food” and “real breaks at lunch so they have plenty of time to interact with their friends.” French school lunches are about health and balance, with at least three courses, plus cheese, normally all locally sourced.

Katie, a 16 year old student who moved to France 15 years ago, loves the school trips she’s been able to go on. She’s had the chance to go on her first ski trip, learn windsurfing on a trip to the coast, as well as visit the chateaux of the Loire and go truffle hunting! She also loves that Wednesday afternoons are reserved for extra curricular activities such as sports, music or crafts. It gives students a chance to “switch off from school work, do something they love and be with friends.”

If you’re thinking of moving to France with children, rest assured that France has one of the best education systems in the world, along with great opportunities for extra activities too. Why not give us a call and see if we can help you in your property search?
