Montricoux – the gateway to the Aveyron Gorge

Montricoux has long been a favourite of the locals but it’s less known by international property seekers. With its proximity to the amenities of the city of Montauban (think history and shopping - a winning combination) and all its mediaeval charm, the village deserves to be on any viewing itinerary It sits in a slightly elevated position by the banks of the river Aveyron and is the gateway to the gorge with its limestone cliffs, stunning villages and beautiful hilly landscape.

We can’t claim to have discovered Montricoux - there’s evidence of early settlements here from Palaeolithic times! The development of the village as it stands today stems from the Knights Templar in the 13th century. Starting with a defensive keep the castle was soon built followed by the monastery and church.

In the mid 16th century, the ‘wedding cake’ church bell tower was developed in Toulousain style. Similar examples are found at nearby Negrepelisse and Caussade. While the war of religion and revolution took its toll on some of the older buildings, the houses at the heart of the old village survived and are of sturdy oak, stone and brick construction, often found in the many other beautiful mediaeval villages in this region. 

Today, Montricoux is a thriving centre with all the shops you need for day-to-day life as well as bars and restaurants. The flour mill remains in full operation, assuring fantastic bread from the local bakery. Larger supermarkets and retail outlets are 5-10 minutes away and the city is easy commuting distance at just 20 minutes.
